SPLIT Control lamps from OSRAM
More safety for food

Food production is subject to a particularly stringent set of criteria. Various quality assurance systems and internationally accepted standards of hygiene such as HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point) virtually eliminate health hazards for the consumer. The same high standards are expected of business and industrial premises and, in connection with this, the lighting. Protection from dangerous glass splinters in the production and display, for example, is ensured by shatter-proof lamps such as the SPLIT Control from OSRAM. With Lumilux T5 and T8, the lighting specialist has now launched an even more heat-resistant variant of the SPLIT Control lamps – for increased safety in the food industry.
Good, bright lighting in operational facilities is very important. Not only does it enhance the
working conditions, it also has a positive effect on hygiene: impurities are detected and
can be eliminated much faster. Of particular advantage are lamps that do not splinter
when they break due to extraordinary loads or wear. Only these types of lamp provide
reliable splinter protection, because even a closed luminaire needs to be opened for lamp
replacement. The risk factor increases where luminaires are mounted horizontally or
slanted, as fine lamp splinters can fall out and get into the production cycle. The best
protection here are vertically mounted luminaires and the use of shatter-proof lamps such
as the SPLIT Control fluorescent lamps from OSRAM.
Effective splinter protection and optimal light – even with higher wattages
The T8 SPLIT Control lamps with a diameter of 26 millimetres and the T5 with 16
millimetres are available in a variety of wattages of up to 58W. A special plastic sleeve
retains splinters if the lamp breaks. This transparent tube is firmly attached to the glass
tube of the fluorescent lamp. Compared with previous versions of this lamp, the material
now is significantly more heat resistant and can thus even be used in closed luminaires
with high wattages over longer periods of time. As part of the HACCP concept (see
additional information), the SPLIT Control lamps meet the requirements of the
International Food Standard (IFS).
The Natura SPLIT Control protects food from impurities caused by lamp breakage and
ensures a fresh and appetising presentation according to DIN 10504. This lamp series
with “light colour 76“ thus presents meat, sausages, bread, cakes and even fruit and
vegetables in the best light.
Wide use – even in laboratories and in plastic and metal processing
Impurities due to lamp splinters can also have far-reaching consequences in other
sectors, resulting in significant costs when whole product batches need to be destroyed
because of impurities, as may happen in the plastic and metal processing industries. Even
more critical are splinters in laboratories, where they can contaminate samples and lead
to false results. In the worst case, valuable samples are rendered useless. These areas
thus also benefit from the use of SPLIT Control lamps.
Additional information: HACCP standards
The HACCP concept specifies that all hazards that may result in medical problems after
the consumption of food must be eliminated from the production, handling and processing
and the transport, storage and sale of food. Consequently, businesses are obligated to
analyse their processes, identify any sources of risk and develop appropriate measures to
ensure a reliable elimination of all consumer hazards. Each business is responsible for the
implementation of these standards in its facilities, as each is required by law to ensure the
safety of its own products. This has been anchored in German law since the Foodstuffs
Hygiene Directive of 1998. Since early 2006, the European Union also prohibits the
handling and selling of foods not produced in compliance with the HACCP concept.
